Children's Health and Fitness - Len Saunders

From USA Today?..

A recent national poll finds that the top health concern of adults across the United States for children is they are ?not getting enough exercise.?

That?s a surprising, but encouraging finding in that it indicates adults are becoming more attuned to the physical activity needs of youth and, hopefully, their own.

The annual University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children?s Hospital National Poll on Children?s Health comes up with a top 10 list of adults? biggest health concerns for kids in their communities.

For the first time, not enough exercise was rated by most adults, 39%, at the top of the list, according to a release from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Thirty-eight percent of those polled listed childhood obesity as the top concern. Smoking and tobacco use was cited by 34% as the biggest concern.

?The strong perception that lack of exercise is a threat to children?s health may reflect effective recent public health messages from programs, such as first lady Michelle Obama?s ?Let?s Move? campaign,? said Matthew M. Davis, poll director and associate professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School.

He said that childhood obesity remains a top concern, as adults realize it is linked to lack of exercise.
