In this province there are three major rivers River Kwai Yai , River Kwai Noi and Mae Klong River. There are several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Kanchanaburi. The Erawan, Sai Yok, Khao Laem, Khaoen Sri Nakarin and Chaloem Rattanakosin National Parks are very beautiful parks in the district.
The province is well-known for the Bridge over River Kwai, which was built next to the town of Kanchanaburi crossing the Mae Klong River. This bridge was first built by prisoners of World War 2 as a part of the railway between Thailand and Burma in 1942. An estimated 16,000 prisoners of war and 49,000 forced laborers died during the construction of the bridge and the Death-Railway line that was to lead to Myanmar. This bridge takes a great place in the history of Kanchanaburi.
Nearby the reconstructed bridge there are monuments including an Allied War Cemetery and a war museum. Kanchanaburi War Cemetery contains the remains of 6,982 war prisoners who lost their lives at the hands of the Japanese Army during construction of the Death Railway. Thais people held River Kwai Bridge Week every year around the end of November until the beginning of December to commemorate the significance of the Death Railway and the Bridge over the River Kwai.
Kanchanaburi is famous among tourists because of beautiful sites as well as different kind of accommodations. There are many River Camping Resorts in Thailand which provide world class amenities and intriguing experience for both first-time and repeat visitors by its long history and ancient civilizations.
Tourism is the main source of income for the locals, though most are engaged in agricultural activities. The province's population is made up of Thai, Mon, and Karen peoples. Local people enjoy folk music and dances which are being celebrated from 500 years.
This town is a perfect place to relax, people come here to watch the banks of the river, inside a raft house, or from a riverside restaurant. Many visitors like to rest along the river with a cold drink and a good book. Many people come here with a planning to stay for couple of days but they extend their stay because the beauty of this place compels them to stay more.
