\>");The latest Batman movie has hit a record-breaking $161 million worldwide over the weekend, albeit falling short of the $175 million prediction made by experts. The number nevertheless became the highest ever take for a 2-D movie at the box office.
In condolences for the victims who died and suffered injuries in the shootings that took place at a early Friday morning screening of ?The Dark Knight Rises,? Warner Bros and other Hollywood studios put off reporting official figures. However, Box Office Mojo and other entertainment sources including Hollywood Reporter and Variety all cited the $161 million or $160 million figures.
If confirmed, the earnings would place Christopher Nolan?s third and final installment of ?The Dark Knight Rises? higher than the $158 million taken by predecessor ?The Dark Knight? in 2008, the last 2-D record.
It remains to be seen if ?The Dark Knight Rises? will beat out ?The Avengers? as the highest grossing film of the year, especially considering Nolan decided not to utilize the 3-D format. ?The Avengers? stands as the third highest-grossing movie of all time with worldwide earnings of $1.46 billion.
?The Dark Knight Rises? has so far garnered $249 million worldwide.
Despite receiving arguable lower ratings and reviews than the previous three installments, ?Ice Age: Continental Drift? garnered $47 million on its opening weekend, but the second weekend drop was severe and unprecedented in the series at 56.2 percent, mostly due to the release of the Batman movie.
In total, the animation has gained $89 million up to now, compared with $176 million from the first installment, $195 from the second installment, and $197 from the third installment.
