Unlocking the secrets of plant genetics could lead to breakthroughs in cancer research and food security

Increasingly, scientists are uncovering surprising biological connections between humans and other forms of life. Now a Tel Aviv University researcher has revealed that plant and human biology is much closer than has ever been understood and the study of these similarities could uncover the biological basis of diseases like cancer as well as other "animal" behaviors.

In his new book What a Plant Knows (Farrar, Straus and Giroux) and his articles in Scientific American, Prof. Daniel Chamovitz, Director of TAU's Manna Center for Plant Biosciences, says that the discovery of similarities between plants and humans is making an impact in the scientific community. Like humans, Prof. Chamovitz says, plants also have "senses" such as sight, smell, touch, and taste.

Ultimately, he adds, if we share so much of our genetic makeup with plants, we have to reconsider what characterizes us as human.

These findings could prompt scientists to rethink what they know about biology, says Prof. Chamovitz, pointing out that plants serve as an excellent model for experiments on a cellular level. This research is also crucial to food security, he adds, noting that knowledge about plant genetics and how plants sense and respond to their environment is central to ensuring a sufficient food supply for the growing population one of the main goals of the Manna Center.

Seeing the light

One of the most intriguing discoveries of recent years is that a group of plant genes used to regulate responses to light is also part of the human DNA. These affect responses like the circadian rhythm, the immune system, and cell division.

A plant geneticist, Prof. Chamovitz was researching the way plants react to light when he discovered an group of genes that were responsible for a plant "knowing" whether it was in the light or in the dark. He first believed that these genes were specific to plant life, but was surprised to later identify the same group of genes in humans and animals.

"The same group of proteins that plants use to decide if they are in the light or dark is also used by animals and humans," Prof. Chamovitz says. "For example, these proteins control two seemingly separate processes. First, they control the circadian rhythm, the biological clock that helps our bodies keep a 24 hour schedule. Second, they control the cell cycle which means we can learn more about mutations in these genes that lead to cancer." In experiments with fruit flies who had a mutated version of one of these genes, Prof. Chamovitz and his fellow researchers observed that the flies not only developed a fly form of leukemia, but also that their circadian rhythm was disrupted, leading to a condition somewhat like permanent jet-lag.

Plants use light as a behavioral signal, letting them know when to open their leaves to gather necessary nutrients. This response to light can be viewed as a rudimentary form of sight, contends Prof. Chamovitz, noting that the plants "see" light signals, including color, direction, and intensity, then integrate this information and decide on a response. And plants do all this without the benefit of a nervous system.

And that's not the limit of plant "senses." Plants also demonstrate smell a ripe fruit releases a "ripening pheromone" in the air, which is detected by unripe fruit and signals them to follow suit as well as the ability to feel and taste. To some degree, plants also have different forms of "memory," allowing them to encode, store, and retrieve information.

Just like us

Beyond the genes that regulate responses to light, plants and humans share a bevy of other proteins and genes for example, the genes that cause cystic fibrosis and breast cancer. Plants might not come down with these diseases, but the biological basis is the same, says Prof. Chamovitz. Because of this, plants are an excellent first stop when looking for a biological model, and could replace or at least enhance animal models for human disease in some types of research.

He is working alongside Prof. Yossi Shiloh, Israel Prize winner and incumbent of the David and Inez Myers Chair of Cancer Genetics at Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine, to understand how the genes Chamovitz discovered function in protecting human cells from radiation.

Two sources talk of Apple iPhone event around September 12th, part sales back it up (update: one more clue)

iPhone 2012 shell

Apple's plans for its next iPhone refresh may be getting very tangible, very quickly. It all started when iMore heard that Apple was preparing to hold an event unveiling the new hardware on September 12th, with a launch the following week on September 21st. Although the relative newcomer to the iPhone release date rumor game is still building its track record, that claim may have just gotten some extra meat: AllThingsD is joining in the chorus and touts its own sources pointing to an event in the same timeframe. While it's almost a month earlier in the year than Apple's iPhone 4S event was in 2011, it's supported by an Apple filing with the SEC showing a sharp uptick in supply purchasing during the spring, which it would need to start production for the fall. All of it is still rumor, of course, but past experience suggests that iOS fans may want to plan any September camping trips for the Apple Store line late in the month, not Labor Day weekend.

Update: Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, who's well-known for his accurate one-word confirmations and denials of rumors, just posted his trademark "yep."

15 magical pieces of tech that need to stop

12 hrs.

They were supposed to make everything better. And maybe they did, a little. But it's time for them to go away now. Sorry, QR codes. It's been real.?

?1. QR Codes

Imagine a hyperlink, except instead of actual readable text that you can type in, it's some weird ziggurat that gives no hint of where it's going. Also, instead of clicking on it, you have to take a picture of it with your camera, and you're probably going to have to take that picture three or four times before it works, and a lot of the time it's going to send you to either a non-mobile site or a dead link. If they all disappeared tomorrow, not one person in the entire world would care, not at all.

2. Routers

For some reason, they all look like they were made in 1995 and most of them act that way too. Everything they do would be much better in a scaled down, Airport-Express-style dongle. Time to burn this one down and start again.

3. Browser plugins

Flash is pulling out of the mobile world (after years of trying to break in) and Silverlight is ruining lives on a daily basis. Soon HTML5 will replace them entirely ? browser plugins don't exist on the iPhone or iPad and they won't exist on Windows 8 RT ?? but in the meantime there are a lot of websites with gaping holes in them, like a newspaper attacked by old lady clipping coupons.

4. Traffic cameras

The?rule was, if a cop caught you speeding, you got a ticket. It was a great system, both for the Smokey-and-the-Bandit factor and because, if you were only a little bit over the line, the officer would usually let it slide. Mailing tickets to people just because they got from point A to point B a little ahead of the curve is cheating, and it moves us towards a creepy automotive panopticon where the force of law is both intangible and omnipresent. But mostly, it's just lame.

5. Inductive charging?

Another idea that's been kicking around for a while without ever taking off. If it's not built into the phone, like the Palm Pre, it's not any easier than plugging it in.

6. Bluetooth audio

This started out as a good idea ? especially the speakers ? but it took 15 years to produce a decent product. Time to call it a day. We're better off with speaker wire.

7. The remote control

True story: I recently visited a friend who was housesitting, and it took us 10 minutes to figure out how to turn on the TV. There were three remotes, and each one had 40 buttons on it, except for the Apple TV remote, which didn't have a power button. Just put it in an app.

8. The cable box?

Speaking of which, here's a strange box that requires another remote control. Destroy! Or get it over with and shove it inside of an?Xbox or Apple TV already.

9. Software license keys?

Hard to enter, easy to crack. Authentication shouldn't be this difficult.

10. Cables For everything

Too many cables. Toomanycables. Too many, cables. Too.?Many cables.

11. The printer/scanner/fax

A surprising number of people still get one of these when they buy a computer, even though there's no reason to do any of these three things, and if you ever run out of ink or toner you will suffer the tortures of the damned. The sooner we stop expecting paper copies of things, the better.

12. Blu-Ray?

A lot of loose copies of Transformers 3 were handed out trying to make this one happen. And the movie looked great! Unfortunately, nobody you know owns a Blu-Ray player, and nobody wants to make a computer that deals with them. You're better off streaming.

13. The power brick

It's enough to make you wish we'd stuck with direct current.

14. Facebook comments

Designed to bring civility to web comments by attaching real people's names to them. Because if you know Richard Morris here is the person saying crazy things, he won't say them, right? Wrong. It continues to be a bottomless will of spiritual death and plain-old web-design misery.

15. Standalone anti-virus software?

It's crazy that this still exists. Just bake it into the OS already.

More Details about http:// here.

Pests, which include insects like bees and wasps, and rodents like rats and mice, can be really hazardous both to human health and to structures and buildings. Especially when aggravated and provoked, such pests can inflict painful bites and stings, causing different reactions like pain and allergies, with some even becoming life threatening. Sadly, a research done by Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in UK revealed a tenfold increase in the number of councils that are no longer providing pest control services. The good news, however, is that you have the option to get rid of pests on your own, or have an Islington pest control professional do the job for you. In Islington, many companies are already available, offering different pest control services for different types of pests. The process often starts from home inspection -- which includes identification of sources of infestations, the amount of infestation and how much the infestation has damaged the structure. If you have chosen to hire an N1 pest control expert, the service provider would offer suggestions for pest extermination while considering the concerns you may have about the processes. Also, while an expert may have specific strategies and methods for certain situations, they may tailor their actions to ensure that they do not just apply the best treatment but also employ pest control techniques that you are comfortable with. The process also includes the use of either chemical or non-chemical type of extermination. The fastest way of eliminating pests and the most commonly used by experts is chemical extermination, or the use of insecticide sprays or powder. Experts generally use chemicals and compounds that are specifically designed to kill pests, and at the same time prevent damage to structures. Meanwhile, especially if you are doing the process on your own, you may also choose to use non-chemical pest control methods, such as habitat modification, elimination of possible hiding spots for pests, and application of pest-baiting or trapping systems. For a small infestation, or an infestation that has just started to grow, eradicating pests on your own may be wiser. There are several products that are easily accessible in the market. Some of the basic tools, which may already be kept at your house, include a mini flashlight, screwdriver, dusting equipment, baits gun and spray rigs, as well as safety equipment including chemical gloves and goggles. Meanwhile, if the infestation has gotten serious and has grown into something that is difficult to handle, asking help from an expert may be your best option. Islington pest control companies offer diverse services, including emergency services like removing hives and nests, as well as killing pests that have started to plague your home; pretreatment of newly constructed homes and buildings which include sealing corners that can be potential avenues of entry for pests; and infestation inspections and sanitation services. Some companies also offer follow-up services.

Offering different types of pest control and treatment for different types of pests, we are one of the most reliable Islington pest control companies you can rely on. Visit our website for more information about the effective N1 pest controlservices we offer.

How NASA launched the 2012 Olympics

The Olympics officially launch Friday in London, but it was a NASA mission from 12 years ago that first lifted off to space with 2012 Summer Games' memorabilia.

Space shuttle Atlantis blasted off on May 19, 2000, on a 10-day mission to the International Space Station. Aboard the orbiter were supplies for the nascent complex, which at the time comprised just two of its eventual 12 modules.

The STS-101 mission came a few months before the start of the 2000 Summer Olympics held in Sydney, Australia. To pay tribute to the international nature of the Games, the shuttle's crewmates carried a banner for the Olympics and a replica of the 2000 Sydney Torch.

But the flag and flameless beacon weren't the only items commemorating the Olympics that were on board Atlantis. Stowed inside a locker was a small package of souvenirs for the Summer Games set to take place 12 years into the future ? though not in London. [ Summer Olympics Cities Seen From Space (Gallery) ]

Houston, (can) we have an Olympics?
Every NASA space shuttle mission carried a small pouch of souvenirs, called the Official Flight Kit, or OFK, packed with mementos to thank the NASA employees and outside organizations who helped make the mission possible.

The space agency would also sometimes use the OFK to fly items for outreach projects and for groups supporting the local communities around NASA centers, such as the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

As Atlantis orbited high above the Earth, Houston was in the running to be the U.S. Olympic Committee's bid city to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing against New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.-Baltimore.

(Ultimately, the U.S. committee selected the Big Apple ? Houston was eliminated in 2002 ? but New York City lost out to London when the International Olympic Committee voted in 2005.)

NASA, in support of bringing the Olympics to Houston ? home of Mission Control and the U.S. astronaut corps ? launched aboard Atlantis 1,000 lapel pins for the Houston 2012 Foundation. The organization described its role as "to identify, package and communicate the reasons why Houston is the best place for the 2012 Olympic Games."

The lapel pins were the shape of the space shuttle orbiter with the foundation's stylized Texas flag torch logo at their center. Under the red, white and blue torch was inscribed, "Houston 2012."

After Atlantis returned to Earth, the pins, which circled the planet 155 times and traveled 4.1 million miles (7.6 million kilometers), were returned to the Houston 2012 Foundation for distribution to its members and supporters.

Many, if not all, of the well-traveled pins were embedded inside acrylic with the inscription, "Flown on Space Shuttle Atlantis, STS-101, May 2000."

Back to the future
In the dozen years that have gone by since the "Houston 2012" pins flew in space, at least a dozen of the pins have appeared at public auctions, where they have been sold into private Olympics and space memorabilia collections.

A recent example of the 3.25-by-2-by-1-inch (8.3-by-5-by-2.5 centimeters) acrylic-encased pin display sold on eBay for $215 this past May.

With the London Games getting under way today, collectors have commented how the flown pins may find renewed interest as an unusual memento from the 2012 Summer Olympics, especially as pin trading is an established tradition at each of the Games.

Mothers and Adult Daughters: A Complex Relationship

As a grandmother, I'm fascinated by relationships between adult women and their mothers. Did you know that there are significant differences in the way different cultural groups regard this relationship?

A study by Mudita Rastogi and Karen S. Wampler compares relationships among three groups: Asian Indian American, European American and Mexican American. Here's what the study shows:

  • Asian Indian American daughters trust the family hierarchy and want support and advice from their mothers. They score higher on measures of closeness and connectedness than women in the other two groups.
  • Mexican-American women want to be dependable rather than dependent and are more interested in giving than in receiving in their relationship with their mothers.
  • Euro-American women desire closeness with their mothers but reject a dependent relationship, scoring higher on measures of differentiation.

The full article isn't readily available on the Web, but you may be able to access it through your library. Look for "Adult Daughters' Perceptions of the Mother-Daughter Relationship: A Cross-Cultural Comparison." It's scholarly but intriguing reading.

The Asian Indian American women in the study lived geographically farther from their mothers than the other groups, which would seem to hamper closeness. They also tended to have higher incomes and more education, which would seem to foster differentiation. But the results were exactly the opposite. Apparently where the mother-daughter relationship is concerned, culture and nurture are more important than money or miles.

Boeing 2Q net income up; raises outlook

NEW YORK (AP) ? Boeing Co. surprised Wall Street with a 3 percent improvement in second-quarter net income Wednesday on strong sales of commercial airplanes. The company raised its earnings forecast for the year.

The results announced before the markets opened eased investors' fears of an imminent slowdown in the company's defense unit, which produces Chinook helicopters and F-18s among many other aircraft models. They also highlighted strong growth in the company's commercial airplane unit which has been rapidly increasing the pace of production for some planes to meet demand.

Boeing, based in Chicago, reported net income of $967 million, or $1.27 per share, for the April-June period compared with $941 million, or $1.25 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue jumped 21 percent to $20 billion from $16.54 billion a year ago.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of $1.13 per share on revenue of $19.28 billion.

Defense revenue rose 7 percent, while revenue in the commercial airplane division jumped 34 percent. The divisions are roughly the same size, but some observers fear they will go in opposite directions.

Boeing's defense unit is vulnerable to potentially severe military spending cuts in January. The cuts would be automatic unless Congress agrees to an alternative for cutting the deficit. The military would face $492 billion in cuts over a decade, with domestic spending reduced by another $492 billion over 10 years.

But it's clear the unit is still holding strong. The second-quarter revenue growth is about the same as Boeing saw in the first three months of the year. Defense contractor Lockheed Martin had reported second-quarter results that surprised Wall Street earlier.

Boeing's commercial airplane unit, meanwhile, is speeding production and deliveries of its new 787. That will move planes that have been mostly finished, but undelivered, out of inventory and turn them into cash. Boeing is also booking firm orders for its new 737 Max, a redesigned version of its classic 737.

Higher costs somewhat overshadowed strong results in both segments. Total expenses rose 30 percent in the spring quarter.

For all of 2012, Boeing Co. now expects to earn $4.40 to $4.60 per share, up from between $4.15 and $4.35. Still, that new forecast is mostly under what Wall Street is banking on. Analysts predict $4.57 per share, on average.

Boeing shares rose 95 cents to $72.98 in morning trading.

Evening Barbecue ~ Fresh Bites

Second in Allrecipes? series of guest bloggers writing about their personal Recipes for Happiness, Michele King is president and the creative force behind the Gaga Goody Company, an online gourmet treat business. Her romance with food inspired her to launch her own blog, Blog.gagagoody.com, to share her insights into the world of food and entertaining. Allrecipes met her in June 2012 at the BlogHer Food conference in Seattle. In her own words, she says: ?I love to cook and enjoy experimenting with new recipes all the time. My original recipes are grounded in the traditional American cuisine I grew up with in Chicago?s western suburbs, meshed with deep Southern influences from Mississippi and Louisiana based on my parents? background. After becoming an adult, living in three states, and interacting with a multitude of different cultures, these experiences helped shape the cook I am today. I love entertaining, and what better way to do it than with food, drink, and amazing company??

For me, summertime means backyard barbeques and friends conversing over a glass of wine. In a fast-paced world of texting and instant messaging, it feels good to put technology to rest in exchange for an evening of good old-fashioned face time. I still have ample respect for formal invitations and stationary, but in a universe where everyone spreads themselves so thin, making time to nourish your friendships is vital.

So, on this day, I prepared a menu that included something for everyone. I have friends whom do not eat beef or pork, so I decided to go with chicken as my safety. My one friend Tiffany loves turkey sausage and she pretty much twisted my arm to make sure I grill some. Luckily for her, it was on sale and I wanted to see how it would cook up on the grill, so everyone wins. With it being over ninety degrees the last few days, there was no way in the world I was going to bake anything. Plus, more of my friends are trying to do better with their eating habits, so having barbeque and a heavy dessert was not an option. Although I am decidedly team carnivore, I do enjoy fresh salads loaded with vegetables and wanted to make sure I had some offerings that were meatless so that all my guests could enjoy the evening and leave with a full belly.

Menu

Barbequed Chicken

Italian Turkey Sausage

Grilled Corn-on the Cob

Fruit

Garden Salad

Pasta Salad

White Wine

We feasted on delicious fruits such as peaches, cherries, and green grapes in the summer heat. What?s not to love about sweet and juicy peaches? Just rinse and serve for a great way to begin or end your meal. I added a nice leafy salad filled to the rim with vegetables and a homemade poppy seed dressing I found on one of my favorite websites, Allrecipes.com.

For my pasta salad, I kept it simple, using two cups of tri-colored rotini pasta, prepared as instructed by packaging. I then cut broccoli, two celery stalks, and two cups cherry tomatoes into bite-size portions. The broccoli and celery I cooked in water until tender, drained, and then mixed with the cherry tomatoes and pasta. Finally, I added a cup of Italian salad dressing and mixed it in well with a big spoon.

On the grill, I prepared corn-on-the-cob. I drizzled the corn with olive oil and melted butter, and then seasoned it with Northern Italian seasoning and kosher salt. Finally, I wrapped the corn in aluminum foil and grilled it.

For the chicken, I used kosher salt, pepper, lemon pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning. As you can see by now, I love Italian seasoning for its versatility. It is a kitchen must! I also found a great sauce for my barbeque on Allrecipes.com. It is just such a good resource and you can always mix things up to make them your own.

Great food, good wine, and the heat is beginning to ease up. What more can you ask for on a sunny day? My advice to any hostess would be to do your grilling and prep work the day before so you can enjoy the evening and really participate in the conversation. Relax and enjoy your food and your guests!

11-Year-Old Boy Exposes UK Airport Security Gap - Business Insider

An investigation has begun at Manchester airport after an 11-year-old boy boarded a flight to Rome without a passport, boarding card or ticket, by apparently tagging on to another family.

At least five members of Jet2.com staff who work at the airport have been suspended following the incident on Tuesday afternoon at the start of the busy summer getaway as the airport was bustling with thousands of people.

Liam Corcoran had apparently run away from his mother while she was shopping at the Wythenshawe civic centre, close to the airport, on Tuesday and had been reported missing. He made his way to the airport, probably on foot.

When he arrived at terminal one, he followed another family, going unnoticed with thousands of people heading off on their summer holidays. Security staff scanned him but failed to realise he was on his own and had no boarding card, passport, tickets or money.

The boy then arrived in the departure lounge and headed to one of the gates where passengers were boarding Jet2.com flight LS791 to Rome. He managed to bypass a security check at the gate without being asked to show either a passport or a boarding card.

Once on the aircraft, none of the crew realised he did not have a boarding card as he took a seat. A headcount failed to alert them to the discrepancy.

The jet took off as normal and it was only during the journey to Italy that passengers became suspicious of the boy and told the cabin crew. The crew members alerted the captain who radioed back to Manchester.

Police at Manchester airport then called the boy's mother to tell her that her son had been found safe and well ? but that he was on a plane travelling to Italy.

The plane landed at Fiumicino airport in Rome where the boy was asked to remain on board while the other passengers left the aircraft. He remained on the plane, accompanied by flight crew, as it took off again to return to Manchester.

Manchester airport and Jet2.com have launched a full-scale investigation into how the boy managed to evade so many checks and end up in Italy. It is understood five members of staff working for Jet2.com have been suspended from duty while the investigation takes place.

The returning plane landed at 10.25pm on Tuesday and it is understood the boy was met by his mother and police officers before being interviewed.

Fellow passengers on the returning plane said they had been told the alarm was raised when Liam told people on the plane he was running away from home.

It is understood the return flight was delayed by 80 minutes while the plane's crew were questioned by Italian border police.

Passenger Sarah Swayne, 26, from Nantwich, told the Manchester Evening News: "He was very talkative and seemed quite unfazed by it all. He was just sat there chatting away about how he'd been trying to run away from home.

"He seemed quite innocent really and I don't think it had sunk in how serious the situation was."

Another passenger, who did not wish to be named, told the newspaper: "When the plane touched down, he clearly didn't want to get off but he was taken down the steps before everyone else and met at the bottom by a group of staff who quickly whisked him away."

A Manchester airport spokesman said: "This extremely serious matter is now being urgently investigated. It is clear that documentation has not been checked correctly at security and the boarding gate.

"The boy went through full security screening so the safety of passengers and the aircraft was never compromised." The airport said his return journey had been handled sensitively to avoid any further distress.

A spokesperson for Jet2.com said: "We are fully investigating the incident as a matter of urgency and the staff involved have been suspended during this investigation."

John Greenway, a spokesman for Manchester airport, said: "We know that people are not very happy about it. The investigation will look at how this has happened. Jet2 will be looking at how this boy got on that aircraft.

"He's evaded checks. He did go through the metal detector and didn't sound any alarms. He wasn't a danger to any of the passengers."

The latest Batman movie has hit a record-breaking $161 million worldwide over the weekend, albeit falling short of the $175 million prediction made by experts. The number nevertheless became the highest ever take for a 2-D movie at the box office.

In condolences for the victims who died and suffered injuries in the shootings that took place at a early Friday morning screening of ?The Dark Knight Rises,? Warner Bros and other Hollywood studios put off reporting official figures. However, Box Office Mojo and other entertainment sources including Hollywood Reporter and Variety all cited the $161 million or $160 million figures.

If confirmed, the earnings would place Christopher Nolan?s third and final installment of ?The Dark Knight Rises? higher than the $158 million taken by predecessor ?The Dark Knight? in 2008, the last 2-D record.

It remains to be seen if ?The Dark Knight Rises? will beat out ?The Avengers? as the highest grossing film of the year, especially considering Nolan decided not to utilize the 3-D format. ?The Avengers? stands as the third highest-grossing movie of all time with worldwide earnings of $1.46 billion.

?The Dark Knight Rises? has so far garnered $249 million worldwide.

Despite receiving arguable lower ratings and reviews than the previous three installments, ?Ice Age: Continental Drift? garnered $47 million on its opening weekend, but the second weekend drop was severe and unprecedented in the series at 56.2 percent, mostly due to the release of the Batman movie.

In total, the animation has gained $89 million up to now, compared with $176 million from the first installment, $195 from the second installment, and $197 from the third installment.

Choice of Entity Matrix | Venture Law Advisors

Our startup clients come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing they have in common is their founders are typically in the process of determining what type of entity (LLC or corporation, in most cases) the client should be, or in some cases, whether they already selected an appropriate form of entity for their business. Another consideration is whether an S-election should be, or should have been, made.

In most cases, there is no ?perfect? form of entity for our clients? businesses. But to help our clients develop a basic understanding of their options, we often start by providing them a basic Choice of Entity Matrix that highlights the implications of forming either an LLC or a corporation and/or making an S-election, and?some pros and cons of each option.

The Choice of Entity Matrix is an incomplete analysis of three different corporate structures. You should not rely on this analysis for any purpose without seeking legal advice from licensed attorneys in the relevant state(s). This publication does not create an attorney client relationship.

Philadelphia prosecutors reinvestigating allegation against West ...

CWN - July 24, 2012

At the request of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the Montgomery County district attorney?s office is reinvestigating an abuse allegation against Bishop Michael Bransfield, who was appointed Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston in 2004 and installed the following year. The bishop has repeatedly stated that he has never abused anyone.

Ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1971, the prelate was named director (1986) and later rector (1990) of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

Reportedly bypassing its civilian review board, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia had retained an investigator who cleared Bishop Bransfield in 2008 following an allegation that he had fondled a high school student on more than one occasion in the 1970s.

Cardinal Justin Rigali served as Archbishop of Philadelphia from 2003 until his 2011 retirement. He was succeeded by Archbishop Charles Chaput.

According to District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, the Montgomery County district attorney?s office also investigated the allegation against Bishop Bransfield in 2008 but did not press charges because of the statute of limitations and lack of cooperation from the alleged victim.

In April, during a Philadelphia abuse trial, a 48-year-old man testified that over three decades ago, he was abused by Father Stanley Gana, a priest removed from ministry in 2002. The man testified that the abuse took place at the future bishop?s New Jersey beach residence as well as at a Pennsylvania farm owned by Father Gana. The man also testified that Gana had told him that the future bishop abused another teenage boy. While this testimony was hearsay, a second witness at the trial?who later became a priest, but then left the priesthood?testified that he had a lewd conversation with the future prelate.

Following the testimony of the two witnesses, a Philadelphia assistant district attorney revealed in court that prosecutors were aware of an allegation ?of a fondling of a student by Bransfield?--the allegation quietly investigated in 2008 and distinct from the conversation at Gana's farm.

After the trial testimony, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia referred this old allegation to the district attorney.

?I think we have the moral obligation to report our conclusion to the archdiocese to ensure that they have the information needed to protect children,? said Ferman, who added that it was ?unlikely? that Bishop Bransfield would be charged.

One of the two witnesses at the trial had testified that Gana, speaking of Bransfield, said, ?Well, I know he's having sex with the kid in the front seat.? The conversation allegedly took place at Gana?s farm.

Two alumni of the Catholic high school at which Bransfield taught recall a trip with Bransfield to Gana?s farm in the late 1970s. Both told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the future bishop did nothing inappropriate.

?I've talked to my buddies who were with me that weekend,? recalls Ronald Rock, who says he was sitting in the front passenger seat. ?There was no inappropriate anything. . . . [Bransfield] was a guy?s guy. We would joke about girls. There was no inappropriate anything.?

Following the comments by the two alumni, Bishop Bransfield issued a statement.

?I am pleased to be able to say that this allegation has been put to rest,? Bishop Bransfield said. ?Ron Rock, the high school student whom I had allegedly victimized (now a prominent Philadelphia businessman), has now publicly confirmed that this allegation is completely false. Timothy Love was also with us on that occasion, and he has also confirmed the completely innocent and proper nature of my friendship with them. I am very grateful to these two Catholic men, both of whom are in their 50s, who have come forward on these matters. I am very fortunate that they have come forward 35 years later to defend me.?

?The witness who testified at the trial about Gana?s purported statement to him about Bransfield has recently confirmed that he has no knowledge of any abuse by Bishop Bransfield at any time,? the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston added in a separate statement.

Referring to the reinvestigation of the allegation that he had fondled a student, Bishop Bransfield said:

At the trial, the prosecuting attorney also made reference to an allegation of improper conduct that had been made by a former student at Lansdale Catholic in 2007. This allegation, which also dated back to the 1970s, was immediately reported to the District Attorney. No charges were brought. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia also conducted a full investigation of the allegation at the time the allegation was received. The investigation included interviews of me, the accuser and others who were at Lansdale Catholic at the time in question.

At the conclusion of the investigation, I was formally notified that the allegation had not been substantiated and that steps were to be taken to restore my good reputation. I was very thankful to have this matter resolved?or so I thought?in 2008. But now the allegation has resurfaced and been reported in the press once again. I can only repeat what I have stated before publicly: I have never abused anyone.

The Biggest Financial Hurdles Young People Face | Avid Investor ...

The Biggest Financial Hurdles Young People Face

You?ve probably relied on your parents to manage your financial matters for years, and you may not know more than a few basic things about personal finance. Then you graduate from college, and suddenly you?re responsible for all kinds of important financial decisions. If you want to manage your finances responsibly, you?ll need to overcome the following challenges.

Financial Illiteracy
?The crying need for more financial literacy in Gen Yers cannot be overstated,? says consumer finance expert Kevin Gallegos, vice president of Phoenix operations for Freedom Financial Network. ?The good news is that managing finances is not an innate skill, but something that is learned like math, reading and writing.?

Unfortunately, financial literacy is rarely taught in schools. Gallegos says that Gen Yers must take the initiative to educate themselves about topics such as budgeting and living within one?s means, paying bills on time, managing credit and debt, making regular contributions to savings, tackling student loans, and planning for retirement. Following just one good online or print resource can provide the foundation to learn these basics, he says.

SEE: The Importance Of Your Credit Rating

Repaying Student Loans

In an age where an undergraduate degree no longer seems to be good enough, student loans have become the biggest challenge facing many young people. ?There?s so much pressure to go to a good school and compete for limited jobs that a lot of students are taking out expensive loans to finance an education that won?t pay for itself no matter how good a job they land after graduation,? says attorney Shane Fischer of Winter Park, Fla. ?If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn?t have gone to an expensive private school and would have opted for the less prestigious public school.?

According to FinAid.org, a student financial aid information website, more than half of graduate students borrow to finance their educations, and their average cumulative debt just from grad school is around $31,000. Almost all law students ? 88.6% of them ? borrow. These students incur an average of about $80,000 in debt. Students pursuing professional degrees fare similarly, with 86.2% borrowing and an average cumulative debt of more than $87,000. Undergraduate debt adds roughly another $10,000 to these students? debt loads.

SEE: Student Loans: Paying Off Your Debt Faster

Learning to Invest and Take Risks
The economy?s performance over the last few years has had a major impact on Gen Yers who haven?t been able to find jobs or who have watched their parents? investment returns disappear.

?Unfortunately, the economic downturn has caused many young adults to fear investing in the stock market,? says Rachel Cruze, professional personal finance speaker and daughter of financial expert Dave Ramsey. ?But you have to think longterm when investing in the stock market. The past few years have been rough, but over time the stock market has made money. If you begin investing early and often you?ll be able to build wealth through your investments,? she says.

Brian Ullmann, CFP and wealth manager at Ford Financial Group, an independent advisory firm in Fresno, Calif., also says that market turmoil has impacted 20-somethings? investment strategies.

?Our younger clients now have a much lower tolerance for risk and have more conservative portfolios. In fact, we have clients in their 20s who wish to have their portfolio positioned for someone twice their age,? he says. ?One of our concerns is that this new, more conservative positioning for Gen Y clients is a permanent change and one that could lead them to miss out on opportunities in the future.?

SEE: What Is Your Risk Tolerance?

Overcoming Pressure to Follow a Worn-Out Path
?One of the biggest hurdles is overcoming societal pressures,? says Matthew B. Brock, CFP, senior partner and owner of Divergent Planning in Bethesda, Md.

Brock says Generation Y is constantly being told that there is a right way to plan financially. This advice often comes from an older generation whose financial status doesn?t show that their way is the right way.

?Young adults no longer want to keep up with the Joneses because the Joneses lost their jobs, lost their house and may never retire,? Brock says.

Gen Yers? choices reflect their preference for freedom and experience over property ownership, he says.

?Most young adults are waiting longer to get married, waiting longer to move to the suburbs and waiting longer to have kids,? says Brock.

Renting means they can leave a job and move to another city on a whim, save up and then take a few months off to travel, or quit a job to start a company. The American Dream does not always include buying a house, a nice car and earning a high salary. It means being free to do what makes you happy.

?Older generations need to recognize younger people may have a better idea of what happiness means than they ever did,? he says.

The Bottom Line
To overcome the challenges they face, today?s young adults need to educate themselves about personal finance, manage the student loan debt they?ve already incurred, avoid or minimize additional debt, learn basic investment skills, and not be afraid to choose their own paths. Also, as youth are so often advised, they need to practice patience.

?Remember that you?re still young and be content with what you have,? says Cruze. ?Work hard so that you?re able save up to make large purchases that you can afford without having to pay interest.?
