History of Video Games

Video Games and gaming have become one of the most popular and desirable pass times of people located all over the world due to their extremely high entertainment value which offers the user the chance to leave their lives behind and enjoy many different kinds of game. The video games industry has seen a huge rise in popularity in recent years due to the incorporation of the internet into these games but they were not always like this. The first types of video games were always arcade based and saw some of the best known titles we see today come into existence such as games like Pong, Space Invaders and many more.

The first games to make their way into the arcade gaming market were released during the early seventies and were always coin operated machines with built in joysticks for control. These games were highly successful and still are today and opened the door to the way gaming has evolved over the past forty years. It was not until 1972 that we would see the first home based video console become available on the market which was the Magnavox Odyssey Console which made use of an at the time innovative concept cartridge system for the games to be placed on. This console saw mixed reactions from gamers as it was very primitive to say the least but still was highly entertaining and eliminated the need for gamers to travel to their local arcade to play their favourite games.

The video gaming market was growing well during 1972-77 but when it came to the end of 1977 the market took a huge crash as many of the leading providers of these games folded under lost profits due to poor sales. Two giants remained in the market during these periods which were Atari and Magnavox and this was one of the main reasons we still see games of this type in the market today. These revolutionary companies chose to brave the storm in the hope the market would change and due to their resilience we now see one of the most popular and extremely high revenue generating industries today. Video games changed a lot in the following years and their evolution hit all new heights with the emergence of the Nintendo Console system which was first released back in 1985.

This all new concept of video gaming immediately saw huge amounts of interest as it was providing gaming resources that had never been seen before. This great 8-Bit console paved the way for the way we view gaming today and without it we would be less than likely to have the options we do today available to us. During the early nineties the video games market saw a cataclysmic state of growth as more and more people indulged in the latest video gaming console for either themselves or their children.

During the next twenty years we saw some of the most iconic video games consoles ever created come into existence such as the SEGA Megadrive and Master System, The Nintendo SNES, Wii, DS and Gameboy as well as the Microsoft Xbox and the Sony Playstation which have taken over the global gaming market place. These consoles offer a much higher level of graphical and processing capabilities which enable gaming developers to provide us with an all new level of gaming satisfaction.
