When It Comes To Business, All Communication Is Marketing

Instead of leaving your marketing to others, it pays to learn the lay of the land, and then do the parts that work best for your personality ? and contract the rest (because you don?t have to do it all yourself).

marketing communication

For the budget conscious small business owner, there are several ways to contract help. This ranges from paying high end professionals to college interns specializing in the service that you need. Truly, when it comes to getting help, where there?s a will, there is a way.

But before you start bringing people in to help with your marketing, you need a marketing plan that you understand. To develop your strategy you can do a few things.

1.) Pay for professional training and their team. In order to be a good driver you have to practice. Teachers, doctors and administrative assistants acquire training. And when it?s time to implementing an effective marketing strategy, it pays for you to learn from successful others. The training can save you time, money (in the long run) and confusion.

2.) Read great marketing books. Some of us are working with a smaller training budget, so grab a great book and make it a habit. At a minimum, as the seasons change, learn something new about marketing. This habit will lead to creative ideas when you need them the most.

3.) Wing it and watch it work. This philosophy is more effective after you have completed number one and two. Winging it without a sound marketing mind can be dangerous. But after all the training, there comes a time when you just have to jump off and fly.

Marketing Isn?t Easy For Every Personality Type?

However, it?s necessary for every business. Truth is, when it becomes important you find ways to get it done no matter what. In ?Harness the Innovative Power of Introverts? Anita Campbell, Founder of Small Business Trends, says:

??Technology can?help introverts collaborate.?

While Anita is talking about maximizing these personalities in a company environment, technology can also help the introvert market her business without leaving her shell.

Since your website is (should be) an automatic staple to your marketing strategy, it?s a perfect initial platform for any business, especially the shy business owner.? Your website is a way to share and spread your message without having to constantly put yourself out there (in a traditional sense).

Well Chosen And Well Placed Words??

Pictures and videos on your site can speak for you while you rest or work one-on-one with a client. Since an effective website is more than just throwing up a brochure page, there?s plenty to pay attention to. To get you started or tweak what you have (as well as other aspects of your marketing) Ivana Taylor of DIYMarketing shares some must have tools for your business in ?7 Technologies Marketers Can?t Live Without.?

In ?Cultivate In-House Geniuses to Inspire Innovation??Anita also highlights the role that your employees play. She says that innovation can come from your team if you cultivate a genius environment (like Apple).? They can also become key players in your marketing strategy.

The Goal Is To Tune Your Employees In?

Create a team that gets excited by helping your clients, to turn them into experts about what you have to offer and how it can help your clients. These ground floor ambassadors hold a key position in your marketing.

When it comes to your business, all communication is marketing, so make the most of it.

Why Mobile Marketing in Bucks County, Small Business Marketing ...

Remember when you got your 1st Blackberry? For me it was early 2003 and I could not put the ting down. Every time it buzzed, I has to see the email and reply right away. Very quickly I was addicted to my ?crackberry?. Smartphone usage is growing at a phenomenal pace and has penetrated over 44% of the US population. The vast majority are using search to find and navigate the local web. Over 70% of these folks are connecting with a local business such as local restaurants, retailers, professional services and entertainment venues.

Mobile Trends

Small business advertising dollars are limited and therefore should be highly targeted at those most likely to buy. Businesses that make mobile a central part of their strategy will benefit from the opportunity to engage the new constantly connected consumer. Here are a few ideas on how to use location based mobile ads with Google.

My Sit-Down with Mover Smitty | Ay Mama!

The Imagination Movers are coming back to Chicago (Waukegan to be exact) on Saturday, October 20th for their 2012 Rock-O-Matic Tour.? My family has experienced both of their Chicago shows (in 2009 and 2011) and they were amazing.??????????

As many of you know from my past articles, ?I Like My Kids' TV Show" and ?Moved By The Movers?, Cooper and Cole are big fans of the Imagination Movers.? And I must confess that I have become a fan as well.

Here is a quick background on the band??

The Imagination Movers are four guys who saw a need for kid?s entertainment.? They started playing at backyard parties ten years ago, and now play hundreds of sold out shows across North America.?? They also have a TV show on Disney Junior and have written hundreds of songs featured on multiple CDs.?

I am also very impressed with the resilience of this local New Orleans band.? Three of Movers lost their homes during Hurricane Katrina, and the last one was a firefighter who went missing during a Katrina rescue effort. They all rebuilt their lives and stayed focused on their collective dream...to create rock music that both parents and children could enjoy together.??

So when I got the chance to sit down with one of the Movers for this interview, I jumped at the chance.? So here is my sit-down with Imagination Mover Smitty.

Lisa:??So how is the tour going?

Smitty:? The tour is a lot of fun.? It?s great to meet our fans who have supported us over the years.? It is a different concept than our past tours.? We are playing many of the songs from our new CD/DVD Rock-O-Matic and some of the favorites from past CDs.? There is a great mix for everyone?our loyal longtime fansAND families who are coming to see us for the first time.? Plus, we have a secret guest that will appeal to the kids.? He is a 7ft. robot that Mover Dave made.? The kids love it!

Lisa:? That sounds very cool.? Coop and Cole will love it.? Speaking of love, we all think the new Rock-O-Matic CD is great.? It?s interesting, the songs seemed to have matured compared to you previous CDs like ?In A Big Warehouse? and ?Juice Box Heroes?.? Is that on purpose??

Smitty:? No.? Our process for writing songs is very organic.? At any moment, if an idea or melody hits one of us, the process starts.? Previously when we were taping the TV show, we actually got song writing homework so to speak.? If we were doing an episode about a certain topic like say pirates, we would need to write a song about that to fit into the episode.? Now we can get back to writing songs like we did when we first started?just when it hits us.? The other thing is that most of the other guys? kids are growing up so what we are writing about is naturally aligning to where we are in our lives right now.? But it?s interesting; we have written so many songs over the years that some of them are just coming around.? Like the song Little Red Wagon; that?s a song we wrote in 2004, but it is now on our new 2012 Rock-O-Matic CD.? Or the song Rain Rain.? That is a song Mover Scott wrote at an outdoor concert we were doing during a rain storm.? It was pouring out and he just started singing that song.? It?s cool.? Ideas for songs just come.? That?s the fun part.

Lisa:??What do you prefer touring or the taping the TV show????

Smitty:??They both have their benefits and challenges.? When we were taping the TV show, it was great to be home.? Also, being able to work with a local New Orleans crew and keep jobs in our city was important to all of us.? However, the days were long working on the TV show.? 14-16 hour days were the norm and we had to do a lot during a typical day from writing songs, to creating show ideas to the on-camera work, but the energy on set was great. It was a tremendous experience and offered us some amazing creative freedom?it was a true gift.? Being on the road touring can be hard since we are away from home.? However, getting the chance to play in front of a live audience is great.? Talk about energy.? And getting the chance to meet the kids and watch them sing and dance with us is awesome.?

Lisa:? You guys have great chemistry.? I know you are all friends, but what makes it work?

Smitty:? We are all friends first and foremost and we have history together like Scott and I went to high school together.? We truly like to be around each other.??? It helps that we are older and more settled in our lives.? We love what we do and the fact that four friends get to do this amazing work is very cool.? We will not let anything get to us.?

Lisa:? Any funny stories to share from this tour????

Smitty:? Not really.? The last tour bus driver we had said we were boring.? Either we are watching a movie, reading, sleeping or catching up with our families.? I guess one thing happened recently that was pretty funny.? One of our tech guys got locked in the bathroom right before a show, and we needed him to do the show.? No one from the venue could get him out so we had to call the fire department to get the door open.? We had to explain to the crowd why we could not start the show on time.?

Lisa:? What is a perfect day for Smitty?

Smitty:??A perfect day for Smitty?hmm.? I would get up early and take the boat out to go fishing.? Then I would come home, have lunch and maybe take a short nap.? Then I would take my dogs for a walk at the local neighborhood park.? I would finish the day with a cookout at home with friends.?

Lisa:? What is your favorite Movers song??

Smitty:? I really do like so many of our songs for so many different reasons.? If I had to narrow it down, I like ?Sunrise Sunset? and ?Rain Rain.? Of course, I like the ?Fire Truck? song and the song ?Dear Old Dad? holds special place to all of us.?

Lisa:? How about your favorite TV episode??

Smitty:? That?s easy?the pirate episode.??????

Lisa:? Thank you for your time.? What is one last thing you want people to know about the Imagination Movers??

Smitty:? We are four friends who are real guys from New Orleans and when we play our songs, we?re actually playing it.? We are playing real drums; real guitars and we love what we do.? Our show is for everyone and we are so grateful to the families who come to see us play.? We want the audience to have as good of time as we are and know that we are playing from the heart.?

I really want to thank Smitty for his time.? He spoke to me for about 45 minutes and was incredibly patient with my list of questions.? I learned that Smitty is still active in his firefighter career.? He actually utilizes his vacation time and trade shifts with others in the station to make time for the Imagination Movers.? I think that is very cool.??I also learned that Smitty recently shaved his head for the St. Baldrick?s Foundation, which is an organization that raises money to support finding a cure for children?s cancer.

I ask you to please check out the Imagination Movers? TV show on Disney Junior and go see them live in concert on October 20 in Waukegan, IL.? Check out their website at www.imaginationmovers.com.

Iraq opens 4th energy bidding round since 2003 war

(AP) ? Iraq opened on Wednesday its fourth postwar bidding round for oil and natural gas exploration, with 39 foreign energy companies registered to compete for exploration rights in a dozen areas of the country.

The government is seeking foreign investment to build up an energy sector hit by years of neglect and violence. Iraq holds the world's fourth largest oil reserves and oil revenues make up nearly 95 percent of the country's budget.

In an opening speech, Iraqi Oil Minister Abdul-Karim Elaibi said exploration of the areas up for bidding will increase Iraq's oil reserves and help the country enter the natural gas industry. He promised that his ministry will "spare no efforts to help and support the companies as partners to achieve the common interests."

Still, conditions for bidders are less attractive than in the three previous rounds held since the 2003 overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

Only areas with undetermined hydrocarbon resources are on offer, while previously the rights to known big and medium oil and gas fields were being auctioned off. Operating costs for energy companies could be high because most of the 12 exploration blocks are in remote and unsafe areas and lack infrastructure.

The government also added a clause for the first time that prevents companies from signing deals with regional authorities without the approval of the central government in Baghdad. Companies that violate the clause will have their contracts terminated, said Sabah al-Saidi, the deputy head of the Oil Ministry's Licensing and Petroleum Contracts department.

The new clause came in response to Exxon Mobil's bold move last year to sign six deals with Iraq's northern self-ruled Kurdish region without Baghdad's approval. In return, Baghdad banned the Texas-based company from taking part in the current bidding, but kept a deal to develop the 8.6-billion-barrel West Qurna Phase One oil field in the south.

Wednesday's auction started with no one bidding for an 8,000-square-kilometer (3,100-square-mile) block in northwestern Iraq with presumed natural gas fields.

Still, the current bidding round poses an opportunity for energy companies because the exploration blocks are in "fertile and easy-to-extract areas," said Kuwait-based independent analyst Kamel al-Harami.

The Iraqi Oil Ministry approved 47 international energy companies to participate in two days of bidding on Wednesday and Thursday, but only 39 companies paid the participation fee.

Top among the approved companies are the Anglo-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, UK's BP, Chevron and Occidental of the U.S., China's CNOOC and CNPC, Japan's Japex, Russia's Lukoil and others.

The blocks are expected to add about 29 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to the current 126.7 trillion cubic feet in reserves, and about 10 billion barrels of oil to the current proven 143.1 billion barrels of proven reserves.

Nearly 70 percent of them hold natural gas and the rest a combination of oil and gas.

Five of the blocks are in Iraq's western Anbar province or shared between Anbar and neighboring provinces; two are in the northern Ninevah province; one is shared between central Diyala province and neighboring Wasit province while the rest are scattered throughout southern Iraq.

The bidders are vying for service contracts in which they will be paid a flat fee, rather than the more lucrative production-sharing contracts in which they receive a share of the hydrocarbons found.

Since 2008, Iraq has awarded 15 oil and gas deals to international energy companies, the first major investments in the country's energy industry in more than three decades.

The goal was to boost daily production from about 3 million barrels now to 12 million barrels by 2017. But Iraq is mulling whether the target should be revised downward to fewer than 10 million barrels, considering a possible drop in demand on oil in the international market and infrastructure bottlenecks.

PS Vita?s first real shooter plagued with day one connectivity woes

Resistance: Burning Skies players may have to wait to get their online shooting thrills

In my review of?Resistance: Burning Skies I note that the multiplayer experience is by far the highlight of the package. This is important because a true, console-quality?online shooter has never been achieved on a?portable console. Unfortunately, while my pre-release multiplayer games were smooth and ran almost perfectly, today's launch of the game hasn't gone nearly as smoothly.

I attempted to connect to a multiplayer game earlier this morning and eventually timed out after failing to connect. I gave it a couple more hours and tried again, but the result was the same. After searching for certain keywords on Twitter I found that others were having similar issues, and it seems the game's multiplayer structure just wasn't quite ready for the influx of gamers wanting to play on day one.

Developer Nihilistic Software?tweeted that it is aware of the issues and is working on the fix, though no further updates have been provided. We reached out for a more concrete answer, but haven't heard back yet.

A launch day server snafu is hardly unique, and titles from all the major publishers have stumbled out of the gate at one time or another. We can only hope that the issues are sorted out quickly, as the online multiplayer is undoubtedly the main reason most people picked up the game as soon as it hit store shelves.

Family dinners may not be responsible for strong families ? The ...

If you?re not managing to sit down to a family dinner five nights a week, perhaps you don?t need to feel too guilty.

Eating dinner as a family has been said to head off problems such as eating disorders, obesity, and inadequate nutrition in the teenage years.

But a new study shows those benefits may owe more to the type of family that frequently sits down to dinner.

Researchers have recently found that the families that eat together more frequently share some common qualities statistically:

  • both biological parents present
  • stay at home mother
  • higher income
  • better family relationships.

It is these qualities that researchers believe have greater impact than the family dinner over levels of teen depressive symptoms, substance use, and delinquency ? three factors typically examined in family meal studies.

?We find that most of the association between family meals and teen wellbeing is due to other aspects of the family environment. Analyses that follow children over time lend even weaker evidence for causal effects of family meals on adolescent and young adult well-being,? said Kelly Musick, associate professor of policy analysis and management at Cornell and lead author of the study to be published in the June edition of the Journal of Marriage and Family.

?Family dinners appear to be part and parcel of a broader package of practices, routines, and rituals that reflect parenting beliefs and priorities?

Family dinners not responsible for strong families

The study indicates that families who don?t manage to have regular family meals can obtain the same benefits if they have a family environment that includes time together, closeness, and good communication.

?Meals may afford a regular and positive context for parents to connect with children emotionally, to monitor their social and academic activities, and to convey values and expectations. This is what we suspect is driving any causal relationship between family dinners and child well being. But, family dinners also appear to be part and parcel of a broader package of practices, routines, and rituals that reflect parenting beliefs and priorities, and it?s unclear how well family dinners would work unbundled from the rest of that package,? said Musick.

A Beautiful Day | Souvenirs of Fatherhood

We settled into the silence and enjoyed our dinner together as a family, but so much had gone into that moment.

The food had just come ?fresh? out of the microwave, since it had sat on the kitchen table too long and cooled down. ?The few tiny drops of rain that fell before dinner had now stopped, mocking me for all of my panic, and leaving a somewhat damp, somewhat crisp feeling in the air. ?The spotty rain was visible only on my t-shirt, and so was the humid 90 degree heat that preceded the rain. ?I came in from outside and joined Erica in the kitchen. ?It was finally time to eat.

When Erica had pulled into the driveway only moments before, she was greeted by one screaming crying kid and another overly concerned big sister. ?I stuck my head out of the tent that was still set up in the backyard to explain, ?That one is fresh, I don?t know what he?s crying about now, but it?s not related to the phone call earlier.? She replied with a quizzical, ?What are you doing in the tent?? the rest of her sentence I?m sure was to be, ??when there is a kid crying in the house?? but to her credit, she didn?t ask the second part, and I may have just assumed it. ?Still, I felt I had to justify myself by explaining that it?was?raining just a few minutes ago and I didn?t want all of their sleeping stuff to be wet for tonight. ?I think I actually used the word ?thunderstorming? which was stretching the truth.

Before she came home, she called me to tell me that she would be very late. ?Even though she was told to pick up the cake at 6:00 the bakery was closed. ?She was waiting for a manager to come and open it up to give her the cake for the preschool graduation ceremony the next day. ?I begged her to hurry home.

I lifted up the bottom edge of my t-shirt to wipe the sweat dripping off my brow. ?I had felt a raindrop earlier and so I jumped up from the picnic blanket and rushed the kids and all the food back into the house, before running out again to grab their gear.

But before that one solitary fateful drop of rain, Pax, Ella and I were all laying on the picnic blanket taking turns applying an ice pack to our foreheads. ?It started as a way to be silly so that Pax would let me put the ice on his forehead, which worked a couple of times but mostly just helped to distract him from the shock of what just happened.

I had seen it all unfold in slow motion. ?He stood up to get out of the pool and the first foot he lifted to try to put over the pool?s edge caught the very tip of his toes at the top of the pool, sending his hands high in the air and toppling him face first onto the driveway. ?I rushed over and rinsed him off to see what the damage was. ?By his crying I thought we would have to make a trip to the emergency room. ?Once I could see the small scrape where the blood was coming from, amidst the black and blue mark on his forehead, I knew we could handle it at home. ?I sat him on the blanket and got him a towel from the house and immediately dialed his mommy.

Meanwhile, Ella yelled to me from the swimming pool asking to get out. ?Erica called my phone again but I had to let it go to voicemail. ?The ribs were still on the grill cooking, the corn cobs in the house were still boiling and then Ella called again to me with her final plea of, ?I have to go potty? which at first, caught me off guard. ?My initial reaction was that she was in a pool, and I gave it a low priority, but after more of her persistence, I left Pax with instructions to hold the ice pack to his head and took Ella in the house to help her get out of her swimsuit and make it in time.

Erica had just called a few minutes before with a status report telling me that she would be a few minutes late because it seems the store was having problems with their photo printing station.

I can still see me now, the trimmed meat searing on the grill, the smell of smoke and barbecue filling the air. ?I said hello to an old friend and simultaneously handled disputes from the pool with a wave of my hand. ?Erica left with the promise that she would be back soon. ?The sun was shining and the clouds were a brilliant white against a bright blue. ?It was a beautiful day. ?At this point, all I heard was some thunder in the distance. ?I was clueless as to everything that was about to transpire around me. ?I actually thought we would make it out unscathed and that Erica would arrive home just in time to sit down and enjoy a nice Memorial Day picnic with the family.

Now, as we sat inside around the kitchen table and looked out the window at the grey skies, the comfortable silence was a welcomed reminder of all the fun we had starting even the night before and how tired we all must be. And that it was still a beautiful day together.

Franchitti earns nearly $2.5 million for Indy win

(AP) ? Dario Franchitti's first win at Indianapolis, in 2007, made him more than just Ashley Judd's husband.

His second win, in 2010, was about pure dominance ? he led 155 of the 200 laps.

This year's victory was about standing among the all-time greats. He earned $2,474,280 from an overall purse of $13,285,815 for Sunday's win. The four-time series champion from Scotland became just the 10th driver to win IndyCar's signature event at least three times.

Helio Castroneves, the only other current driver with three wins at Indy, already was promoting next year's race.

"Dario, well done, man," Castroneves said Monday during the victory awards celebration at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "Three times. Now, we're going to be racing, so who gets four? That'll be cool, huh? That'll be really cool."

Now that Franchitti has basically done it all, there's only one thing left.

Dancing.

Castroneves won 'Dancing with the Stars,' so a few of the drivers had a little fun with Franchitti now that he's joined Castroneves as a three-time winner.

"Three times," Alex Tagliani said. "I think the drivers think you need to step it up. We think if you come and try to do it four times, you should try 'Dancing with the Stars.' I think that's the only thing you can try to do to step it up."

Castroneves continued the joke.

"You want to do it? I know the people. I have people," he said as Judd gave the cutoff sign.

Franchitti prefers to let his car do the dancing. He started 16th, took the lead for good in the No. 50 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda car from his teammate, Scott Dixon, on lap 199. He overcame a spirited passing attempt by Takuma Sato in turn 1 on the final lap. Sato spun and hit the SAFER Barrier while Franchitti hung on to win the race under caution.

Sato explained the reasoning behind his aggressive inside move.

"There's only one podium, which is the winner," Sato said matter-of-factly.

Sato joked that Franchitti wouldn't want to see the No. 15 car next to him in the future.

"I'm small, but I need a little bit more room," Sato said, drawing laughter from Franchitti and a thumbs-up from Judd.

When asked if everything was OK between himself and Franchitti, Sato said "I think so. I hope,'" as Franchitti nodded affirmatively.

Justin Wilson recalled getting hopeful for a moment when he saw that Franchitti and Sato nearly connected.

Then again, it was Franchitti.

"Dario's a wily old cat," Wilson said. "He had something up his sleeve."

Dixon, who won the race in 2008, earned $1,102,280 for finishing second. It was his seventh consecutive top-six finish at Indianapolis.

Franchitti expects a tougher Dixon the rest of the year.

"I'm a little upset here," Franchitti said to Dixon. "I know you're going to come back stronger."

Franchitti's move to elite status nearly didn't happen. E.J. Viso, who rear ended him in the pits early in the race, acknowledged that he was a bit too close.

"Well, it didn't cost him much," Viso said. "Happy, man, that you won the race. You deserve it."

Unfortunately for Franchitti, he learned Monday that three-time winning status often comes with jokes about your age.

"Dario, you are a legend," Ryan Briscoe, the polesitter who finished fifth, said. "You were a legend to me when I was racing go carts."

James Hinchcliffe wouldn't mind if Franchitti opted for early retirement.

"I hope someday, you get sick of all this winning and let the rest of us do it," he joked.

All kidding aside, the theme of the night was the acknowledgement of Franchitti's new place in Indy history.

"You're a legend, in my opinion," fellow driver Ed Carpenter said. "You're up there with the all-time best, and it's an honor to work with you."

Twilight Director to Robert Pattinson: Don't Date Kristen Stewart!

If Catherine Hardwicke had her way, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart might never have gotten together. For real!

While it's nearly impossible now to imagine R. Patt without his K. Stew - just watch this adorable video of Robsten cuddling and kissing! - the Twilight director tells Elle Magazine that she noticed chemistry right away between the potential co-stars... and feared its consequences.

A Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart Pic

"Rob and Kristen sat down at the table and did the biology scene," Hardwicke said of Pattinson's audition. "I felt the sparks. I could see the attraction. Kristen was very vocal - she knew she had the strongest connection with Rob. I said, 'Let me have a day to see if it translates to the screen.'"

We all know it did, of course. But Robert was 21 at the time and Kristen only 17, which led Hardwicke to warn her handsome leading man: 'She's underage, don't even think about it! It's a law in our country.'"

Fortunately, Pattinson and Stewart evaded the police until the latter turned 18 and have been happily dating ever since.

'I don't think our marriage will change anything,' she tells French magazine Gala.

Although there have been multiple reports and confirmations from relatives of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake's engagement, the notoriously private couple have yet to really speak out about their upcoming nuptials — until now.

Biel recently opened up about her life with Timberlake during an interview with French magazine Gala — the English translation of which was provided by People — and she admitted that she doesn't expect married life to be any different.

"To me, nothing will really change, because I'm almost never home," Biel said. "But when I am home, I enjoy cooking. I especially love making cupcakes," she added, then admitted her attempts to get creative with recipes can be "a total disaster" but that she's had a pleasant surprise with a recent batch of zucchini fritters.

"I don't think our marriage will change anything," Biel said. "[But] it will be a challenge finding a balance between my private life, family and work, and I'm ready."

The "Total Recall" actress went on to say that she doesn't have immediate plans to settle down and have children but welcomes the natural progression of things.

"[I'm] someone who lets things happen naturally," she said. "For me, getting married doesn't mean we should limit ourselves to some pre-defined idea. Rather, it's an opportunity to explore new things in life."

Speaking to the top three things she values most about her future husband, Biel gushed about Timberlake's personality and strong sense of character.

"[His] ability to communicate well ... to be able to express his feelings. Then loyalty. And, finally, honesty."

The couple have not made their wedding details or date public, but according to reports, they're planning a big celebration sometime this summer.

Screenplay Review - The Final Broadcast - ScriptShadow

Premise: A strange cult kidnaps a girl from a small town and uses a local radio talk show to promote their twisted beliefs.? About: This is the duo who wrote one of my favorite scripts from last year, ?When The Streetlights Go On? (finished #2 on last year?s Black List). Not sure if they wrote ?Broadcast? before or after ?Streetlights? but if you liked that script, you?re going to be plenty satisfied with this one.? Writers: Chris Hutton & Eddie O?Keefe Details: 127 pages - undated I?m still baffled by these writers.? I do not believe they?re only 23 years old.? Not because the writing is so specific or so good, but because they seem to understand things about life that you don?t understand without an older perspective.? I mean, when your generation?s most famous singer is Justin Bieber, you don?t reference The Beatles.? When you grow up during the Iraq War, you don?t know the intricate make-up of Vietnam.? Yet these two seem to know things that are way beyond what their years would imply.? I guess they?re just old souls.? But I won?t be convinced until I see them in person.?? I mean let?s start with the first page - a centered 30 line paragraph detailing the world you?re about to be transplanted into, which includes segments like: ?The Final Broadcast takes place in an era neither here nor there. It could be 2012 as easily as 1952. It?s a vacuum; an America that exists only in our collective unconscious. The kind of place Edward Hopper might have painted.?? Normally I?d slaughter writers for this.? The audience can?t see this paragraph. These aren?t titles or a voice over.? It?s never meant to be seen onscreen.? So if it?s not in the film, it shouldn?t be in the script! And yet I believe it?s indispensible to the story.? We need to understand this world.? We need to wrap our heads around its idiosyncrasies and rhythms and tone to understand how it?s going to play out on screen.? And this paragraph does that. So I?m in. Even though I?d never recommend anyone else trying it.? But what really sets these two apart ? and I probably mentioned this in their last review ? is how every single scene in their screenplay feels different.? Read the first 10 pages of Broadcast for example.? We get a monologue from a ?Carl Sagan Lite? character in some cheap PBS show about the origins of the Universe.? He tells us, in no uncertain terms, that our existence is pointless.? It?s jarring, unnerving, unsettling, and yet there?s a poeticness to it all that propels you forward. You need to read more.? You WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT ? the only thing that truly matters in a screenplay. So what does happen next?? Well, we meet a girl named Teresa Carnegie, who happens to be the daughter of the host of that show.? She?s watching a drive-thru movie with her friend when she?s kidnapped by some very nasty men.? Afterwards, we run into Gary Glossup, a transplant from the big city who?s just moved in to take over the local talk radio gig.? Gary?s DJ?ing career is turned upside-down when he receives a live call from the men who took Teresa.? They call themselves ?The Association? and proclaim that the end of the world is coming. Because the local cops are morons, Gary has no choice but to get involved in the investigation and save Teresa, a task that?s personal to him as he lost his own daughter many years ago.? So Gary buckles down and starts investigating the kidnapping, which brings him to another boy who went missing some weeks back named Billy Turman.? Rumors were that Billy was abducted by aliens.? But he was eventually found hanging from a tree during Halloween.? Everyone just assumed he was a prop, until the smell clued them in.? Gary?s helped by a strange young reporter named Claire who happens to be in town doing a report on a rare moon eclipse.? But when Gary finds out that her credentials don?t check out, he begins to wonder if she? telling him the truth.? As the eclipse draws near, more insanity begins to unravel, and Gary finds himself questioning everyone and everything around him.? All of this leads, of course, to a shocking conclusion.? You know that show The Killing?? You know how you?ll be watching an episode of it and you?re wondering why the f*ck nothing is happening??? But there?s still something entrancing about the tone and the characters that keeps you going?? And since you want to find out who killed that damn girl, you stick around?? Well imagine The Final Broadcast as the best episode of The Killing ever written times a thousand ? because it has that same kind of dark spooky tone, but it?s actually entertaining!? And because there?s some actual urgency to it (the eclipse ? ticking time bomb!) it moves where The Killing does not.? Speaking of urgency, I have to point out that while these guys do break their share of rules, the core dramatic storytelling pillars are in place.? You have the GOAL ? find the girl.? STAKES ? her life, as well as the lives of others the cult keeps kidnapping.? And URGENCY ? the impending eclipse, when they promise to kill Teresa by.? So with that core there, they can go off-book in a number of other places. Like the way they write their scenes. ?I?ve been Twit-Pitch Reviewing every night and not enough people are surprising me. I?m not talking about big surprises.? I?m just saying, when you write a scene, you have to know that TYPE of scene has been written tens of millions of times before.? So it?s ESSENTIAL you add a minor twist or two to keep it fresh.? ? I was just talking about this with a professional screenwriter the other day in fact.? She had a scene that had been in thousands of movies before but she still had to write it. ?Just the fact that she knew she had to approach the scene differently put her ahead of 99% of the writers out there, because most writers don?t think about that stuff. We talked it through and found a few new elements which would allow her to write a unique version of the scene, and it turned out rather well. So here, in The Final Broadcast, we have the sort of common ?femme fatale? trope.? Our hero sees the drop-dead gorgeous stunner at the end of the bar and we?re assuming we?re going to get that boring predictable ?one-up each other? clever dialogue laced with sexual subtext scene. Then, in the end, he?ll convince her to come home with him.? Instead, he buys her a drink from across the bar, she walks over, hands him the drink, says she doesn?t go out with men twice her age, and leaves.? The conversation is over before it even started. ?Hmmm,? I thought, ?that?s a little different.?? And the thing with this script is, it?s packed with dozens of moments like this. I can?t stress how important this is because it?s the only time I truly get excited by a screenplay these days - when I?m not sure how scenes or a story are going to unravel. That was my experience with ?Streetlights? and that was my experience here.? It?s rare that I give a writer two consecutive ?impressives? in a row.? Their follow-up is almost always a let-down.? But these guys have done it.? And in many ways, this is actually a step-up from ?Streetlights.?? It?s more structured.? It?s cleaner.? But it doesn?t quite reach the heights of that script and I think it?s because there?s a lack of character connection here. ??We really identified with and bonded with the main character in ?Streetlights.?? Here, it?s more about the story/the plot.? Luckily, the plotting and story were top-notch, which is why this still makes the ?impressive? pile.? I love these writers.? [? ] what the hell did I just read? What I learned: I always say ? don?t write 5-6 line paragraphs in a screenplay.? And I?ll continue to say that until my very last script read.? However, any rule can be broken if there?s a direct correlation between the rule and the writer?s strength.? These two are so good with prose, so smooth with their writing, that I actually ENJOYED reading their long paragraphs, which is incredibly rare.? Take for instance, this description of Gary: ?He was once a very handsome twenty-five year old.? However many years and many six-packs have softened his features a bit; softened everything but his old school heritage and sense of resolve. He?s a man cut from the same cloth as Newman or McQueen. The kind of guy they just don?t make anymore.?? That?s a long freaking paragraph.? But it flows so naturally and gives you such a great understanding of the character, that you allow it.? So a big part of breaking the rules is understanding your strengths. If you?re great at dialogue, you can get away with 8 page dialogue scenes.? If you?re great with prose, you can write longer paragraphs.? The trick is to never blindly assume you?re good at something. ?Make sure you KNOW.? Because that?s the reason behind a lot of bad writing ? writers assuming they?re good at something they?re not. ?Play to your strengths people!
