No matter how many claims of "no-one cares" we might hear, there are clearly tons of people who do care about BBM. BlackBerry has today provided some figures for the first proper week of cross-platform life for their messaging platform and it looks like good news all round. BBM now has 80 million active users, having gained 20 million since launching on Android and iOS. And those are some good numbers. Andrew Bocking, EVP of BBM:
“It is great to see so many people downloading BBM, but the true measurement for us is engagement – the connections being made and the conversations in which our BBM community engages. The power of BBM has always been the active, real conversations and interaction that our customers enjoy,” said Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President of BBM at BlackBerry. “From here on out, we will focus on active users of BBM and will no longer focus on simple download numbers."
Active users is a key differentiator from just measuring download numbers. There's no doubts countless people who downloaded BBM to see what all the fuss was about, then never went back to it. BlackBerry practically invented messaging, so it is great to see that at least for now, the decision to go cross-platform was vindicated.
BlackBerry isn't resting on their laurels either, with BBM Voice, Video and Channels – in other words, the full BBM experience – on the roadmap for future updates. In this world of iMessage and Whatsapp, it's pleasing to see that BBM can still cut it. Have you found yourself using BBM since its arrival on iOS, or were you one of the early downloaders that didn't go back? Sound off in the comments!
